What amount could you be entitled to? What are the conditions?

Experiencing the disappointment of a missing suitcase, standing empty-handed at the baggage carousel, is a common situation in air travel – your baggage could have been misplaced or not loaded onto your transfer flight. Despite the cause, mishandled baggage is always an inconvenience.

What to Do If Your Luggage Is Lost?

What steps should you take if your baggage is delayed or lost?

Could you be entitled to Aegean Airlines delayed baggage compensation?

Primarily, report the lost/delayed baggage right away.

At the first sign of your baggage being delayed, make yourself known to the representative at the baggage claim area. To report a lost bag, you should have your passport, boarding pass, and baggage tag (usually a sticker attached to your boarding pass when you check in). Providing a picture of your bag or any additional details can speed up the process, but isn’t required. Even with only your passport and boarding pass, you can report the loss.

The representative will note down your contact details and provide you with a Property Irregularity Report or PIR with a unique reference number for tracking. You should keep this document.

Typically, if your baggage is misplaced, it is found within the first 24 hours. As soon as your bag is located, the airline will communicate with you to schedule a delivery.

Tracking Your Lost Baggage

You have been issued a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport that holds an individual reference number. Keep this safe as you will need it to track your baggage.

To monitor the status of your misplaced items, you can use the airline’s online baggage tracing system. The representatives will give you the necessary details upon reporting your lost bag. Important information like your name and PIR are required to use this baggage tracer.

Bear in mind, that the number on your baggage tag is not the same as your PIR number.

What are the steps when your baggage is delayed?

How can you claim delayed baggage compensation from Aegean Airlines?

Baggage Delayed For 5+ Days

In case your baggage hasn’t been retrieved within a five-day period after you’ve reported it, contact the airline to provide a detailed description of the baggage and its content. This can be done by completing the content list available on the airline’s website or baggage tracer website (the airline will provide you with a link).

Reimbursement of Expenses

Keep in mind that reimbursement for essential items like toiletries or necessary clothing is possible if your baggage is lost. Retaining the receipts of these purchases is important as they will be needed when applying for a claim. The reimbursement is only for essential items.

The claim should be submitted within 21 days from the date when the lost baggage is received (or, when you receive a confirmation that your bag can’t be located).

Lost Baggage (You Can Get Compensation)

Aegean Airlines has 21 days to trace and return your baggage.

If your delayed baggage hasn’t been traced within this 21-day period, it is officially declared lost. Following this, you will be eligible to apply for compensation with the airline.

Compensation up to €1300 can be claimed.

Note that it’s not recommended to carry electronics, artwork, jewellery, etc., in checked baggage, as Aegean Airlines (like other airlines) isn’t responsible to compensate for the full value of such items, only up to the limit stipulated by the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage.

When filing a claim, ensure to produce your boarding pass, baggage tags, and the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with your unique reference number. If you’ve had to pay additional expenses while waiting for your baggage, you can submit a claim by presenting receipts for your purchases.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

The need for travel insurance can differ depending on the situation.

While it’s not always required when lodging a claim for baggage delays, it’s strongly advised to consider purchasing a policy before setting off on your travels.

Travel insurance can offer valuable peace of mind, particularly in the face of unforeseen circumstances. Many policies are also quite affordable, making the investment well worth considering. If you’re dealing with lost or delayed baggage, and the fault doesn’t lie with you, you could be entitled to a refund for necessary out-of-pocket expenses through your insurance provider.

Speaking of baggage claims, this might also prove a simpler route than communicating directly with your airline. However, before making any purchases, contact your insurer and hold onto all receipts. Without proof of purchase, you can’t expect a reimbursement. Lastly, a clear understanding of the details of the policy, including whether it covers cases of baggage delay, is crucial.

Travel Prepared

Preparing for the possibility of baggage loss or delay is key.

Make sure to always pack a spare set of clothes and underwear in your carry-on bag. This is particularly important when travelling to tropical destinations where specific clothing suitable for the weather and swimwear might be necessary. Keeping essential medications and valuable items in your carry-on bag is also advised. This measure ensures that should your checked baggage go missing or is delayed, you’ll still have access to any must-haves and valuables.

What is your experience with baggage delays on Aegean Airlines flights? Has Aegean Airlines ever lost your baggage? Have you ever applied for “Aegean Airlines delayed baggage compensation” (reimbursement of expenses in case of baggage delay)?

Please note that the rules for compensation for lost or delayed baggage with Aegean Airlines are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Aegean Airlines and other airlines globally.
