Aegean Airlines overbooking compensation / denied boarding compensation.
How much is flight overbooking compensation? Rules? How to get it?
Your Aegean Airlines flight is overbooked. The airline has sold more tickets than there are seats, but everyone showed up for their flight. As a result, you have been denied boarding involuntarily. Overbooking of flights is a common practice, and there are laws that protect air passengers in Europe in the event of overbooking. If you are denied boarding involuntarily, the airline is obliged to pay EU denied boarding compensation.
There are two ways you can claim this compensation.
1. Aegean Airlines Overbooking Compensation: EU Denied Boarding Regulations
Have you been denied boarding by Aegean Airlines?
Are you protected under the EU law in the event of denied boarding? If so, what are your rights? In which situations are you entitled to denied boarding compensation from Aegean Airlines? When it comes to denied boarding due to overbooking, the rules are simple – you have a right to receive care, and in certain cases, compensation.
If you’re flying to or from Europe with Aegean Airlines, and you are involuntarily denied boarding due to overbooking — you are entitled to flight overbooking compensation (EU denied boarding compensation) up to €600.
This only applies to overbookings.
If your passport is about to expire, or if you don’t have a visa, and you are denied boarding because of that, you won’t get compensation from Aegean Airlines. Also you won’t get compensation if you are denied boarding voluntarily (you voluntarily give up your seat).

1.1 Voluntary Denied Boarding
Yes, there are two types of denied boarding.
If you are denied boarding voluntarily, you can’t get denied boarding compensation. How does this work? What is voluntary denied boarding?
So, this is the situation. Your flight is overbooked. The airline has sold more tickets than there are seats, but everyone showed up for their flight. As a result, the airline has to refuse boarding to some of its passengers. It could be you.
At first, the airline will look for volunteers who will give up their seats and travel later. They will be provided with a new flight ticket for a later flight. The volunteers also will be given instant compensation in the form of vouchers or cash. If you are offered compensation like this and you accept it, it’s called voluntary boarding denial.
In this case, you aren’t entitled to denied boarding compensation from Aegean Airlines.
You don’t have to agree to an offer like this.
1.2 Involuntary Denied Boarding
There are situations when passengers don’t have a choice.
There are not enough volunteers. Then the airline needs to bump passengers from the flight involuntarily. If you have been denied boarding involuntarily (you weren’t a volunteer), know that it’s called involuntarily denied boarding, and you are eligible for compensation.
What happens in case of involuntarily denied boarding?
- The airline must provide you with a new flight;
- If you do not wish to board the rescheduled flight, the airline must refund you fully;
- In addition to that, you are entitled to receive care from the airline*;
- You are entitled to compensation up to €600 per passenger.
* Aegean Airlines must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If you have to wait overnight, Aegean Airlines must provide you with free accommodation and free transfer from and to the airport.
1.3 Right to Care
All passengers travelling with Aegean Airlines have a right to care.
If you have to wait for 3+ hours for your new flight, you have a right to receive care.
What does it mean for you as a passenger?
Aegean Airlines must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If it’s an overnight delay, the airline has to offer you a free hotel stay and transfer. Agreeing to these free services doesn’t affect your chances of getting compensation.
Contact the airline if you haven’t been offered anything.

2.1 How Long Does It Take?
If everything goes smoothly, you might get your compensation after 2-3 months. If not, it could take more. If the airline wrongly refuses to pay compensation, you will have to take the case to a national enforcement body or court. All of it takes time. If you are claiming compensation yourself, it might take a while until you figure it out.
If you don’t want the hassle, work with a flight compensation company.
3. How Much Can You Claim?
In the EU compensation amounts are fixed.
In most situations they range from €250 to €600.
Here is how you can calculate Aegean Airlines compensation yourself:
When your destination is within the EU/UK:
€250
If the distance of your flight is
up to 1,500 km
€400
If the distance of your flight is between 1,500 – 3,500 km
When your destination is outside the EU/UK:
€250
If the distance of your flight is
up to 1,500 km
€400
If the distance of your flight is between 1,500 – 3,500 km
€600
If the distance of your flight is more than 3,500 km
If you are claiming compensation on your own, this is the compensation amount you should be requesting. Otherwise, the airline might offer you a smaller amount. You don’t have to accept a smaller compensation. The compensation amounts are regulated by the European Union, not Aegean Airlines.
There’s one exception. When the flight distance is 3500+ kilometres and you reach your destination 3 to 4 hours later than planned, you are entitled only to 50% of the compensation amount (that means €300, not €600).
3.1 Aegean Airlines Voucher Code, Discounts or Cash?
According to the law, compensations have to be paid in cash or by bank transfer.
If Aegean Airlines offers you a voucher instead of compensation, you don’t have to accept it. Request bank transfer instead. All airline compensations and refunds in the EU have to be paid in cash or by bank transfer.
