If you are notified of the cancellation 7 – 14 days before the scheduled time of departure:
- You choose a new flight offered by your airline, which departs not more than 2 hours before the original departure time and you reach your destination less than 4 hours after the original arrival time. In this situation you are not entitled to compensation.
- In other situations you are entitled to compensation.
If you are notified of the cancellation less than 7 days before the scheduled time of departure:
- You choose a new flight offered by your airline, which departs not more than 1 hour before the original departure time and you reach your destination less than 2 hours after the original arrival time. In this situation you are not entitled to compensation.
- In other situations you are entitled to compensation.
Could you be entitled to Aegean Airlines flight cancellation compensation?
Yes, if the flight meets these conditions:
- Cancellation must be due to the fault of Aegean Airlines;
- It must be a last-minute flight cancellation (not more than 2 weeks before departure);
- Flight must be to/from the EU or the UK.

1.1 Extraordinary Circumstances
Sometimes reasons for flight cancellations are out of the airline’s control.
Situations like these are known as extraordinary circumstances. In such cases, you aren’t entitled to flight cancellation compensation no matter how last-minute is the cancellation.
If your Aegean Airlines flight is cancelled due to bad weather, natural disaster, civil unrest, terrorism threat or security issues at the airport, you can’t get flight cancellation compensation from Aegean Airlines. These events are out of the airline’s control. The airline is not responsible for flights that are cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances.
What about the possibility of strikes? Not all strikes qualify as extraordinary circumstances. Certain strikes, however, are. If your Aegean Airlines flight is canceled due to an Aegean Airlines staff strike, you will most likely get compensation from the airline, since this is considered the carrier’s responsibility. However, if a countrywide strike causes a delay or cancellation, it will be deemed extraordinary circumstances (over which the airline has no control).

1.2 Right to Care
Your Aegean Airlines flight is cancelled last-minute.
Now you have to wait at the airport for a new flight.
In this case you have a right to care from the airline. As long as the waiting time at the airport is at least 3 hours. What does it mean for you?
Aegean Airlines must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If your new flight is leaving only on the next day, a free hotel stay (including free transfer) must be offered.
It doesn’t affect your chances of getting compensation.

And again, the rules are very specific.
In Europe, if your flight is cancelled (no matter the reason for cancellation), you have to be given a choice between a new flight or a full refund. If you choose the cancellation refund, note that it has to be paid in full. You can choose whatever suits you best. These are the laws in the EU. These laws aren’t affected by Aegean Airlines internal policies (Aegean Airlines refund policy).
If your flight is cancelled, Aegean Airlines should offer you either a new flight or a full refund for cancellation. It applies to most Aegean Airlines flight cancellations, even those due to extraordinary circumstances.
Refunds must be paid within 7 days.
You don’t have to agree to an Aegean Airlines voucher refund.

In case of cancellation of a flight, the passengers concerned shall: (a) be offered assistance by the operating air carrier in accordance with Article 8.

It doesn’t cover cases when you cancel your Aegean Airlines flight.
2. How to Claim Aegean Airlines Compensation?

2.1 How Long Does It Take?
It depends on the case.
Some cases take less time to solve, some — more. If everything goes smoothly, you can get compensation after 2-3 months. If not, you might need to take additional steps such as working with a national enforcement body or court. All of it could take months.
It’s not a fast process.
3. How Much Can You Claim?
The compensation amount in the EU is up to €600 per person.
Here is how you can calculate your Aegean Airlines compensation:
When your destination is within the EU/UK:

There’s one exception. When the flight distance is 3500+ kilometres and you reach your destination 3 to 4 hours later than planned, you are entitled only to 50% of the compensation amount (that means €300, not €600).
3.1 Aegean Airlines Voucher Refund or Cash?
What if you are offered a voucher instead of compensation?
Aegean Airlines might offer you a voucher instead of compensation. Do you have to accept this voucher. No. You can ask for money instead. Airline compensation and refunds have to be paid in cash or by bank transfer.
4. What Happens If a Flight Is Cancelled?
What to do if your Aegean Airlines flight is cancelled?
First of all, wait for the email from Aegean Airlines.
If you have, check that message. Most likely it has all the information about what options do you have. Most probably, you have to choose between a new flight (there might be more than 1 option) and full refund.
If you have already arrived to the airport, and it’s a very last-minute flight cancellation, follow your flight information and wait for the announcement from the airline. Stay at the landside area of the airport while you wait.
In most cases, you’ll be given a choice between a new flight and full refund. If you choose the refund, keep in mind that it might take up to 7 days to receive it.
Are you entitled to compensation? If your flight is cancelled less than 2 weeks before departure date, and it is due to the airline’s fault, you might get flight cancellation compensation from Aegean Airlines.
Do you need to be on time for another flight? If it’s an Aegean Airlines connecting flight, don’t worry. If you miss your connection because your previous flight was delayed or cancelled, Aegean Airlines will book you on another flight free of charge. But if it’s a self transfer (separately booked flights), it’s your responsibility.

My flight was cheap. Can I get compensation?
Yes, because the price of the ticket doesn’t matter.
If your flight is eligible to compensation, the price of your ticket won’t matter when you’ll make a claim. No one is going to ask you for that. The cheap price of your ticket also doesn’t affect the compensation amount either.
I don’t have travel insurance. Do I need it in order to claim compensation?
No, you don’t.
Just like with the ticket price, insurance doesn’t matter.
If you flight is eligible to compensation, you don’t need insurance to claim it. When you will be making a claim, you won’t be asked to provide insurance papers.
Can my kid get compensation from Aegean Airlines?
Yes.
If you are entitled to compensation (EU flight delay compensation / flight cancellation compensation / denied boarding compensation), your child/baby will be too. Even if you were traveling with an infant who had a special infant ticket. Your child will get the same amount as you.
Can I claim compensation for another person?
Yes, you can.
You can help your friend, relative, family member or acquaintance get flight compensation. Even if you weren’t on that flight yourself. Just ask them to provide a boarding pass and passport copy. They will also need to sign some documents.
Can I claim compensation for old flights?
How far back can I claim compensation?
It depends on the laws of the country.
But in most cases, in Europe, you can claim compensation even for old flights. If your flight was 2-3 years ago, you might still claim compensation for it.
What to do if Aegean Airlines is denying my claim?

If your flight is eligible to compensation, then yes.
If you arrived 3+ hours later than scheduled, and the disruption was due to the fault of the airline, you can get compensation. Even if you were given a new ticket to your destination.
