Aegean Airlines Missed Connection Compensation

Aegean Airlines missed connection compensation.

How much can you claim? What happens if you miss your flight?

When it comes to missing a connecting flight with Aegean Airlines, there’s a possibility that you’ll be eligible for compensation. The claim amount depends on different factors of your particular scenario. It’s essential to understand that your nationality, ticket cost, and insurance coverage don’t affect your compensation eligibility. This is because Aegean Airlines abides by specific EU regulations, and if compensation is due, it is the airline’s responsibility to pay.

You have the option of filing a claim independently or enlisting the help of professionals.

1. EU Missed Flight Connection Compensation

Should you miss your connecting flight with Aegean Airlines, you may be eligible for compensation. The regulations that apply in such scenarios are simple.

1.1 Missed Connecting Flight Due to Delay: Compensation

In situations where a delay on your initial Aegean Airlines flight causes you to miss a connecting flight, you might be entitled to compensation under EU regulations.

If the delay is attributable to the airline’s fault, you can claim up to €600, if your flight is to or from Europe. Since Aegean Airlines is a European carrier, this rule applies to all Aegean Airlines flights within, to, and from Europe. Legally, there is no such term as “Aegean Airlines missed connection compensation,” as it falls under the same category as Aegean Airlines flight delay compensation.

You must arrive at your final destination 3+ hours later than planned to be entitled to Aegean flight delay compensation. In summary, compensation can be granted if:

  • It’s a 3+ hour delay;
  • It’s the fault of Aegean Airlines;
  • Flight is to/from Europe.

The same rules apply to Aegean Airlines connecting flights. Consider that in this context, your destination refers to your final destination and not any layover airports.

Consider this scenario. You’re travelling with Aegean from Athens to New York via London. Your intended final destination is New York. London is simply a layover airport. If your arrival in New York is delayed by 3 or more hours due to Aegean Airlines’ fault, you’re entitled to compensation for the missed connecting flight for the entire “Athens – New York” journey.

Remember to file a compensation claim!

1.2 Missing a Connecting Flight Due to Cancellation

When a flight is cancelled leading to a missed connection, and results in reaching the endpoint with a delay of 3 hours or more, you might be eligible for flight cancellation compensation from Aegean Airlines, similar to flight delays.

This holds true if the cancellation is because of an issue at Aegean Airlines’ end, and your journey is to or from Europe. The compensation amount can go up to €600 and is calculated based on your flight’s distance.

In brief, you can qualify for missed connection flight compensation if:

  • Aegean Airlines is responsible for the cancellation (or delay) of your previous flight;
  • You arrive at your destination three or more hours late;
  • You are flying to/from Europe.

Don’t forget to submit a compensation application!

1.3 What About Self-Transfer Flights With Aegean Airlines?

In instances where you have individually booked your flights (i.e., self-transfer), the rules stated above won’t apply. This means, that if a flight gets cancelled or delayed, you aren’t eligible for compensation for the other flight.

For instance, if you have reserved a flight with Aegean Airlines and another with Wizz Air, and Aegean Airlines cancels their flight, you could be entitled to a refund for the cancelled Aegean Airlines flight. But, Aegean Airlines has no obligation concerning your Wizz Air flight, and won’t offer any help if you miss it.

Remember to consider this when making separate flight reservations.

By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

2. Extraordinary Circumstances

Extraordinary circumstances represent situations outside Aegean Airlines’ control.

Compensation does not apply in these scenarios. Examples of such circumstances include extreme weather or a global health crisis. If you’re unsure about any provided information, it’s best to verify it. To prevent inaccurate information from the airline, cross-verifying all details regarding refunds and compensations is beneficial.

Alternatively, you could consult a flight compensation company to evaluate your case and ensure that you’re not being misguided. For instance, mechanical complications with the aircraft are typically the airline’s responsibility and do not constitute extraordinary circumstances, despite what some airlines might suggest.

Instances that are not deemed extraordinary circumstances:

3. Right to Care From Aegean Airlines

Passengers stranded at the airport are entitled to right to care.

If your Aegean Airlines flight is postponed or cancelled, leading you to miss a subsequent flight, Aegean Airlines should provide you with support while you await your next flight. Additionally, in the event of a missed connection, Aegean Airlines is obligated to offer a complimentary alternative flight, provided the issue was not a result of your actions.

Concerning aid, if your airport layover exceeds three hours, you are entitled to receive care from Aegean Airlines.

  • After a delay of 3 hours, Aegean Airlines should provide you with free refreshments and meals proportional to your waiting time, in addition to two free phone calls, emails, or faxes.
  • In the event of an overnight delay, Aegean Airlines should also offer free hotel accommodation and airport transportation.

4. How to Claim Aegean Airlines Flight Compensation for Missed Connection?

There are two means to claim EU flight compensation.

The first way is to approach Aegean Airlines directly. You can go to their website and connect with their customer support centre to request compensation for your flight. Bear in mind that this procedure can be very time-consuming, and you might need to negotiate with Aegean Airlines to secure the compensation you are entitled to. Having evidence to present how much later you arrived at your destination can be advantageous.

The second, more simple approach is to get legal representation.

Adopting this strategy, you will have legal experts managing all facets of your claim. Our partners offer these services – details below.

4.1 How Long Does It Take?

What time frame is to be anticipated for obtaining compensation from an airline?

Commonly, it takes a minimum of a couple of months to receive compensation.

If your case necessitates referral to a national enforcement body or court, this process may extend by a few more months, and in certain situations, even an extra six to twelve months.

Numerous elements can influence the length of time it requires to obtain compensation. If an airline promptly recognizes your claim and agrees to pay compensation, the process can be accelerated. However, if the airline denies your claim, it may extend, and you might need to undergo an extended legal process to obtain compensation.

Additionally, the complexity of your case might affect the duration it takes to receive compensation. Every case is unique.

5. What Amount Can You Claim?

The compensation amount is fixed and varies from €250 to €600.

Here is how you can determine the amount of your Aegean Airlines flight compensation:

When your destination is within the EU/UK:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1,500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1,500 – 3,500 km

When your destination is outside the EU/UK:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1,500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1,500 – 3,500 km

€600

If the distance of your flight is more than 3,500 km

There’s one exception. When the distance is 3500 kilometres or more and you reach your destination 3 to 4 hours later, you are entitled to compensation of €300, not €600. If the delay is longer than 4 hours, you will get full compensation of €600.

5.1 Aegean Airlines Voucher Refund or Cash?

It’s probable that Aegean Airlines may propose a voucher as an alternative to cash compensation.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous airlines proposed vouchers as opposed to monetary compensation for flight delays and cancellations.

Nonetheless, you reserve the right to decline a voucher and choose bank transfer compensation instead. It’s crucial to understand that airlines are legally obligated to offer compensation and refunds in cash or bank transfer, not in the form of vouchers or coupons, in accordance with European law.

6. What Is a Connecting Flight?

A connecting flight implies that you will have to board more than one plane to reach your final stop, with intermediate stop(s) at one or more airports.

This means there won’t be a direct journey from origin to destination, but a stop at another airport(s) will be involved. There might be multiple stops in certain situations. The duration spent at the airport between flights is known as a layover, and if it extends beyond 24 hours, it’s referred to as a stopover.

There are two types of connecting flights:

  1. airline-protected transfers,
  2. self-transfer flights.

6.1 Airline-Protected Transfer

How can you identify if you have an airline-protected transfer?

  1. You have secured a reservation for a connecting flight, either directly with Aegean Airlines or through a third-party service like Kiwi, Expedia, or eDreams.
  2. Your entire journey consists of two or more flights and has a single booking reference number by Aegean Airlines. The booking reference number from the airline is required, not the travel agent’s booking reference number. By entering your booking reference number on Aegean Airlines’ website, you can access and manage your full travel plan.
  3. If you have this booking reference, and it works like explained in the bullet point 2, you have a protected transfer.

6.2 Self Transfer

How to find out if your flight is a self-transfer one?

  1. If you have several consecutive flights that were booked individually, you are on a self-transfer flight.
  2. If each flight has its own booking number, you are having a self-transfer flight.
  3. If you made separate payments for each flight, it’s 100% a self-transfer.

Distinguishing between self-transfer and airline-protected connecting flights can sometimes be a perplexing task. You can check your tickets. If every flight comes with a distinct booking reference or reservation number, it is likely a self-transfer. One more thing to note is that online travel agencies such as Kiwi or Expedia also mark whether the flight is a self-transfer.

7. Missed Connection

A missed connection refers to the scenario where you fail to board your subsequent flight on your itinerary. This situation can occur if your prior flight was unexpectedly delayed or cancelled, or if you were delayed due to personal reasons.

Particularly when the layover or connection time is very short, such as 1 or 1.5 hours, it becomes quite easy to miss your subsequent flight.

Note that in most cases airlines offer assistance to passengers who have missed their connections. In fact, if a delay in reaching your destination isn’t a concern, experiencing a delay could be beneficial as you could qualify for flight compensation of up to 600 euros per passenger.

Delayed or cancelled flights result in missed connection?

7.1 Missed Airline-Protected Transfer

Opting for an airline-protected transfer is a safer choice for travellers.

If you’re unable to catch your connecting flight and it’s not due to any fault of yours, the airline will provide protection and support.

When flight cancellations or delays lead to a missed connection, passengers are safeguarded, and they might also be eligible for compensation. The airline organizes a new flight and offers free hotel accommodation (if the next flight is scheduled for the following day). To resolve the issue, you should get in touch with airline representatives at the airport.

Remember that compensation might be applicable under certain situations.

What about refund or compensation?

Generally, you can’t get a refund for a missed flight.

However, if your trip falls under the conditions of EU Regulation 261/2004, you could qualify for missed flight compensation for your entire journey (that’s the same as flight delay compensation / flight cancellation compensation).

Remember to submit a claim for compensation!

7.2 Missed Self-Transfer Flight

A self-transfer implies booking multiple individual flights.

What happens if you don’t make your self-transfer connection?

If a single flight from your self-transfer itinerary is delayed by a minimum of 3 hours, cancelled, or if you’ve been denied boarding, you could potentially claim compensation for that particular flight. Nevertheless, neither of the airlines included would be liable for your entire trip or any connections you miss.

Example: If you’ve booked a flight with Ryanair to Frankfurt, or “flight 1,” and then a subsequent flight with Aegean Airlines to New York after a layover of 3 hours, referred to as “flight 2,” any missed connection caused by delay or cancellation of flight 1 is not the responsibility of either airline.

Should flight 1 be delayed for more than 3 hours, you could be eligible for compensation from Ryanair. If a last-minute cancellation occurs, Ryanair may provide a new flight, refund, and compensation for flight 1, as stated in Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.

However, if this results in you missing your Aegean Airlines flight, it falls upon you to book a new flight to your final destination (New York, in this example). Neither Ryanair nor Aegean Airlines will provide any compensation for flight 2, nor will you be entitled to compensation for a missed flight connection.

The same applies to the Aegean Airlines flight – flight 2. You may claim compensation for this specific flight if it’s delayed or cancelled last minute. At the same time, if they cancel it last minute and offer a flight that departs 2 hours earlier than you can manage, it’s up to you to navigate this situation.

If you possess missed flight insurance, it would be advisable to contact your insurance provider. They may be able to provide support, depending on the circumstances.
